Do Targets set themselves or do they need a little help?

Out walking recently I saw a fieldfare sat silhouetted against the morning sky. They are amazing birds that are a member of the thrush family but unlike thrushes that stay in the UK all year, these are only winter visitors. Most that winter in Britain are from Scandinavia, Finland or northwest Russia, but some might be from very much further east. They come here for the warmer weather even though we are in the process of putting on even more jumpers!

So what makes them know they need to start their flight? Do they start their planning early? Is it the same plan every year? Do they fly with the same group every year? Well I am thinking not. The weather in their summer feeding lands starts to get colder and therefore they know that they need to move. So something happens and the response is movement.

If only I were so responsive at times. How many times do I think I should concentrate on my own development, sit down to write a plan and nothing goes on the paper. My mind goes blank. I am never good with a blank piece of paper – especially when I am sat in a room on my own. I work best when I am with people.

Maybe I need to rethink about how I go about planning my next year’s development. Instead of thinking this is an annual task – why don’t I take something from the fieldfare. Why not allow my curious mind to see personal development as a response to the environment around me. That for me means that I look to keep taking part in activities that I enjoy, that I learn from. I need to keep my networks fresh and learn from others. I certainly need to accept invitations to activities that take me out of my comfort zone.

So I need to take away the thoughts of what I ‘ought’ to do, or what ‘should’ be on my list. What if I start with my first steps towards getting somewhere, by deciding that I am not going to stay just where I am? That’s a big step. I am committing to take action. I think Gandhi had something when he said…

I need to remember that I should never be intimidated by what I don’t know at this time. Surely that is the point of learning. So my task this year is to plan how I am going to keep my foundation of doing what makes me happy while I grow as a professional and leave a legacy of the impact I have has on others. 

So how do I turn this wish into more? Someone once said:

A goal without a plan is just a wish,

A vision without action is a daydream 

Action without vision is a nightmare 

Make a plan 

So what will that plan look like for me and how do I get there. I find being with other people stimulates by thoughts. Conversations spark my thinking and I definitely agree with Benjamin Franklin when he said “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn’. I know I need structure and I know I need to find clear space and time set aside – or it just doesn’t happened for me. I need to have an environment where there is space to talk things through, to be supported but also to be challenged. Then some quiet time to write the detail and make realistic plans. My aim is to work through what I need to do to achieve the best version of me for 2020.

So with this in mind we are running a Seminar 16th January for those who would like to join together for a session on personal planning and target setting. 

It will be a powerful 2hour workshop designed specially for those who want to see a different outcome for 2020. There will be tools and techniques shared to give structure to our planning. There will be resources and space – and lots of coffee and biscuits!

This session could be used for Target Setting in its widest form. 

· Personal planning for your year ahead may be what you want to look at.

·  Concentrating on your planning for building wellbeing into your year

· Planning for growing your business next year

· Space to think through your organizational plans and what they mean to you

Our base for this and our future sessions will be the Quaker Rooms in Liverpool City Centre. If you have never been there – you really should, they are lovely.

So until I set my new goals for 2020 I am going to keep doing what I know keeps be healthy and happy. For me this is fresh air everyday while out walking, some Pilates and space for interesting conversations with positive people.
